There is a Harley Davidson skull logo sticker on my toolbox that has been stuck there longer than some of my mates have been riding. I put it on myself, I put it there on purpose, and I have never once felt the need to explain it to anyone who walked into my garage.
Ask ten Harley riders what the Harley Davidson skull logo means and you will get ten answers. Most of them will be better than anything a marketing department could have written, because most of these meanings were earnt riding a motorcycle.
That is the thing about this particular piece of graphic design. It is everywhere, it is instantly recognisable, and almost nobody who wears it can point to an official document telling them what it stands for. The meaning is not printed on the back of the packet. It comes from the culture that adopted the skull long before Harley put it on a catalogue page, and from what each rider decides it means when they pull it on.
The Harley Davidson Skull Has a Name: the Willie G. Skull
The design most people mean is commonly called the Willie G. Skull. It is a front-facing skull set inside a circular treatment, with the words “Harley Davidson Motorcycles” around the edge.
In some versions it has grown a pair of wings either side. The name points back to Willie G. Davidson, the builder and designer Harley credits in its own Willie G. Skull Collection, which spans clothing, parts and decor. So this is not an anonymous graphic somebody sketched on a napkin. It is tied to a person and a period of Harley history, which is a fair part of why many men my age feel something when they see it on a bike or jacket.
If you look at any one of the countless Harley Davidson Skull products they tell you a lot about how the Willie G. skull sits in the market. You can put a small sticker on a toolbox, a helmet or a ute window, or you can cover half a trailer with a larger version. It is decoration as much as identity, and Harley knows exactly what it is selling.
What the Skull Means Is Not Written Down Anywhere Official
I have never seen Harley publish an explanation of what the Harley Davidson skull stands for. No statement, no plaque on the dealership wall, nothing that says this is the meaning and this is what you are meant to feel. That silence is not a gap in the story. It is the whole reason the symbol still works.
The meaning lives in sheds, clubrooms, tattoo studios and long rides home in the dark. A young bloke sees a skull on an older bloke's Heritage and decides he wants one, and thirty years later he still could not tell you in one sentence why. That is how a real symbol behaves. It resists the tidy explanation.
Where Riders Actually Get the Meaning From
Biker culture has used the skull for a long time, and for several reasons stacked on top of each other. It is a reminder that you are not here forever, which tends to sharpen a person up better than any motivational poster. It is defiance, a refusal to look tidy and polite for people who prefer their motorcyclists quiet. It is also a bit of dark humour and a bit of luck, the kind of thing you slap on a bike the way your grandfather slapped a charm on a fishing boat. There are also deeper meanings that I discuss in this video.
Harley riders did not invent the skull and Harley did not invent it either. It was already in the culture before it turned up on a fuel tank or in a parts catalogue. What Harley did was make it famous, and in doing so, make it available to absolutely everyone.
The Problem with the Harley Davidson Skull
Here is the reason I ended up building my own symbol rather than wearing the Harley Davidson skull logo. A symbol loses a bit of itself when it is on a shelf in every dealership and sitting as a free vector download on every second design website. You can find the Harley skull as a PNG, SVG, AI, EPS or CDR file in about the time it takes to boil the kettle. It is on decals, shirts, stubby holders and half the merchandise in the shop.
None of that makes it a bad design. The Willie G. skull is a genuinely good looking piece of graphic work, and there is nothing wrong with liking it. It just stops being a statement about you, because it says the same thing about ten thousand other blokes. It is popular. Popular is not the same as personal.
The Skull I Built Instead, and Why It Carries More
Old Not Dead is my answer to that. The skull sits under a crown, and that crown does all the heavy lifting. A plain skull signifies death and that the end is coming for all of us. The crown above the skull says very strongly, the end can wait, because I’m not finished yet.
Old Not Dead has a tagline, Stay Young, Body and Mind, which is not about chasing the face you had at twenty five. It is about keeping your body working, keeping your mind active and interested, staying fit and healthy so that your throttle hand keeps working.
The meaning is deliberate. Stay young in body and mind, and give age the middle finger while you are at it. That is a personal promise, not a licensed image. Nobody hands it to you at a counter. You decide it, you wear it, and it means exactly what you put into it. Compared with a skull that turns up on every second trailer in the country, that is a much more powerful thing to have on your back.
Riding a Harley Doesn't Conflict With Any of This
Nothing here is a knock on the brand. I have spent decades on Harleys and I am not about to stop. The Willie G. skull belongs to the Harley Davidson family, and I am happy to see it on a decal or a tank. What I wanted was something that did a different job, a mark that says something about how I plan to spend the back half of my life rather than something that says I bought a shirt.
That is the real distinction. One is a famous image. The other is a decision. If you have been riding long enough to have a few opinions of your own, you probably already know which one you would rather wear.
Skulls on More Than a Fuel Tank
The skull does not stay on the bike. It ends up on shirts, hoodies, helmets, tattoos and shed walls, and that spread is part of why it means so much to riders. The history behind skulls in rider culture, including the tattoo side of it, is worth a read in our piece on Harley skulls, tattoos and symbols.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Harley-Davidson skull logo called?
It is commonly called the Willie G. Skull. The design is a front-facing skull set inside a circular treatment, and in its winged version it has a pair of wings either side. The name is tied to Willie G. Davidson, the builder and designer Harley credits in the Willie G. Skull Collection, which includes clothing, parts and decor.
Does Harley-Davidson explain what the skull means?
Harley has not published a line explaining what the skull stands for, and I have never found an official statement on it. The meaning comes from rider culture, from how bikers have used skulls for generations, and from what individual owners decide it means to them. That is why two riders can wear the same skull and mean quite different things.
Why do motorcyclists wear skulls?
Riders have used skulls as a reminder that life is short, as a bit of rebellion and as a dark joke all at once. In biker culture the skull is less about death and more about refusing to go quietly. It is a symbol that says I am still here, I still ride, and I am not dressing it up for anyone.
Where can I get a Harley skull decal in Australia?
Harley dealerships and their online shops stock Willie G. Skull decals in several sizes. The winged version is sold as a 6 x 8 inch sheet with one decal in shiny or matte black, made in the USA. A 29 inch silver version is also listed for trailers and walls with Australia-wide delivery. Check current stock and pricing with the seller before ordering.
What does Old Not Dead mean?
Old Not Dead is the idea that age is not a finish line. The skull and crown sit alongside the tagline Stay Young, Body and Mind, which is about keeping your body working and your head interested rather than chasing some version of youth you had decades ago. It’s also about the rebellion against a society that treats older members like they are past their use by date. It is a personal motto that happens to fit on a shirt.
At the end of the day, a skull on a decal is just ink on vinyl until a rider gives it a job. The Willie G. skull got its job from a culture that had already decided what skulls meant long before a catalogue existed. Mine got its job from me, in a grage, with a crown on top and a promise underneath. That is the difference between a logo you buy and a symbol you mean.
